Bathroom Lighting: Leave it behind, or Take it with You?

Posted in Collectible Stuff, Real Estate Resources, University of Home Improvement by admin on the January 21st, 2010

I know I’ll come across as a little weird here, but have you ever invested so much in your home that you want to take the accent pieces with you when you move? My wife and I are in our first home, and we’re looking to move. Though we’ve lived in a modest neighborhood for the past six years, we put a lot of time and effort on the little things, paint, curtains, bathroom lighting, etc. And now that we’re leaving, it’s hard to leave some of the removable things behind.

I scoured the city looking for just the right bathroom lights for our guest bath. It took at least two weeks. And like everything else, once you step into our home, you wonder why the inside is so much nicer than the outside. Simple answer: the inside is much cheaper to update than the outside. When you can’t afford a palace, you have to renew your mind to see it as the the amazing home it can be on the INSIDE. The downside of this mentality is that eventually you move to the house you wanted in the first place, and you part with all the clever ways you chose to class up your starter home.

Which begs the question: Should I leave the bathroom lights or should I take them? Is it tacky to take them? I’m not talking about anything dishonest. I’m talking about putting a contingency in the contract when we sell that states we are going to keep the bathroom lights. They go so well with the silk flower arrangements my mother-in-law made for the wall sconces. It would be a shame to separate them.

Yes, we theoretically COULD do something similar in our new home, but considering how much it will cost, I don’t know if interior decor will be our priority. When we bought our starter home, we decided to set a little bit aside and decorate as we can. With this second home, I just don’t know when extra money will come available. And honestly, if we get the house I think we’re gonna get, I’ll be happy with less decor as long as my leather couches and Tempur-pedic mattress make the trip.
